Aims and Objectives
Aim
To produce a resource for a variety of professionals (e.g. teachers, careers advisers, employers) who may be involved in the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subject choices and careers.
Objectives
- To ensure that the toolkit is a prompt for individuals so that they endeavour to make their practice more inclusive and reach a wider group.
- To provide a ‘generic’ resource; this can be adapted according to the individual’s level of knowledge, confidence and interest in equality and diversity.
- To highlight where more in-depth information and support can be obtained.
- To encourage individuals to consider their own practice when creating resources or interacting with young people.
- To encourage practitioners to think beyond the areas of equality that are covered by legislation (e.g. to include looked-after and traveller children).
Note: Some of the equality areas have been better researched than others with regards to STEM careers. Where it has not been possible to provide information and resources that are STEM specific, more general information has been provided. There will also be issues and approaches that will be relevant to a number of equality areas. For example, using positive role models, inclusive images in publications will be relevant to all equality groups.
