Case Studies - Raising Aspirations for Young Black Men
‘I work with a small group of black boys. They hate school but are really bright and capable of doing well. Could STEM careers offer them anything?’

Advice
The use of Case Studies and Role Models has been shown to have a powerful impact when trying to encourage pupils to look at options which may not be in their sphere of thinking.
You have not mentioned which year group your students are in but if they are in Y10/11 it may be that you could encourage them to think of alternative work experience options which include some STEM-related careers. For example, someone interested in construction might find it interesting to look at engineering too, and you could ask the work experience co-ordinator at your school to suggest companies where STEM jobs are in evidence.
It may be that the diploma approach to learning or other vocational options would suit some of these learners, as they are more hands-on and often appeal to people who prefer being able to relate their lessons to the world outside of school. You could speak to your school's Connexions Personal Adviser about how you could support this group of learners too, especially as the Connexions Service targets young people who might be at risk of feeling disengaged from school.
You could also encourage the group to use the Future Morph website to find out more about STEM Careers in a fairly relaxed way using the games and resources to explore a wider range than they might expect.
